What is SEO?

SEO - "Search Engine Optimization" - is a set of techniques for increasing a website's visibility in search engines.

SEO can be done on your website - "on-site" - or on elements external to your website - "off-site" or "off-page".

SEO can also be technical or qualitative. The technical element refers to how search engine robots perceive your website, while the qualitative element refers to the quality of the content as perceived by a human.

The challenge of SEO is that search engines are constantly changing their algorithms and the degree of importance given to certain factors for a website's SEO.

To cite just one example, several years ago Google placed great importance on links from external websites pointing to a website in order to give the latter a high ranking in search results.

Recently, the importance of external links has diminished to make way for content quality as the determining factor. Improvements in artificial intelligence now enable search engines to better understand the content of a website and thus give less importance to external links.

Do you have to pay search engines to appear first?

It's worth noting that search engines display two types of results.

One category of results are ads by companies that have placed bids to appear in prime locations.

When you click on these results, the advertiser must pay for each click. The visibility of these results does not depend on SEO techniques, but rather on the online placement of advertising campaigns through tools made available to advertisers by search engines.

We call this type of results "paid results". Search results that appear in the top positions as a result of SEO optimization are instead called "organic results", and clicks to these results are free.

What's the trick to successful SEO?

The formula for organic SEO is constantly changing, and search engines don't reveal their magic formula!

It's possible to infer the importance of certain elements and search engines, such as Google, publish guides with SEO recommendations.

Many independent publications also offer theories on the factors of importance for SEO.

In brief, the fields of expertise in SEO are numerous and the algorithm is in constant fluctuation, evolving according to the level of performance of the servers and programmers at the major search engine and artificial intelligence companies!
